Rheumatoid arthritis of children

Rheumatoid arthritis of children

Rheumatoid arthritis is an articular problem that occurs especially in women between the ages of 40 and 60. Rheumatoid arthritis affects the soft parts of the joint, called the synovial membrane. The role of this membrane is to maintain joint stability and mobility. Rheumatoid arthritis affects not only adults but also children, in which case it is called juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Autoimmune disease

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis manifests itself, like the forms suffered by adults, as an autoimmune disorder. The body interprets certain elements as harmful and tries to protect itself, attacking the tissue in the joints. The immunological reaction causes inflammation of the synovial membrane, as well as problems with the cartilage, ligaments and tendons that support the joint.

The specialists have identified several factors that influence the appearance of this autoimmune reaction, without confirming that these are the only causes or conditions that are absolutely necessary. The genetic inheritance, like the arthritis manifested in adults, favors the trigger of an autoimmune reaction against the joints. According to studies conducted on this subject, in the families of children affected by juvenile rheumatoid arthritis there is a higher incidence of other autoimmune diseases. However, rheumatoid arthritis can also be triggered in the absence of genetic factors, due to a misinterpretation of the body's own elements as harmful foreign bodies. The autoimmune process can also be triggered by viral or bacterial infections.

Three forms of manifestation

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis has three forms, classified according to the number of joints it affects. The most common is pauciarticular arthritis, which affects up to four joints. About 60% of children diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis have this form, also called oligoarthritis. Polyarthritis, or polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, causes problems in five or more joints. This accounts for about 30% of the diagnosed cases. The least common form is systemic. This is different from other types of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in a series of manifestations that occur before joint problems, such as fever and urticaria. In addition to these symptoms not found in other forms of arthritis, the systemic one can affect all joints.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is a condition with unpredictable evolution and changing symptoms, which can disappear and reappear. All its forms are manifested by pain and joint rigidity and fluid accumulation in these areas. Refusal to move, lack of physical activity are indications that can help us figure out when the child is suffering from arthritis.

Take action to reduce inflammation and pain

In order to regain joint health, the therapeutic approach is often aimed at reducing inflammation and joint pain. Also, once mobility has been regained, specific exercises for strengthening joints are recommended.
