The medical world and not only in Europe and the United States of America are facing a new problem: weight gain in children and adolescents. In Romania, although no epidemiological studies have been carried out, weight gain is observed in children and adolescents.
"Obesity in children and adolescents is defined as a body mass index (BMI) higher than the 95th percentile, meaning compared to 95% of children of the same age and sex," says Dr. Daniel Grigorie, primary physician at the Institute of Endocrinology "CI Parhon" from Bucharest. The doctor also says that the overweight in children and adolescents is difficult to define, because they do not "buy" only fat, but also bone and muscle mass.

Doctors claim that the risk of overweight in children is higher in those who are overweight at birth (over 4 kilograms), have obese parents or spend a lot of time in front of the TV or computer. There is a problem also for those who do not do any physical movement, with the tendency, especially for us, that more and more children will be exempted from sports hours. Dr. Daniel Grigorie also says that these data reflect a profound alteration of lifestyle (nutrition, sedentary lifestyle), because endocrine and genetic problems represent less than 1% of the causes of extra kilos.
"If there are medical problems, overweight is associated with signs of hypogonadism, malformations or mental retardation," warns the endocrinologist. Dr. Daniel Grigorie says it is urgent to evaluate and control weight in children and adolescents. "In addition to the family medical history, high calorie foods with low nutritional value should be identified and then reduced, eliminated or replaced. For example, fast food should be eaten only once a week, fries should be consumed. "change" with vegetables and fruits.
Food in the family environment, in the kitchen, reducing the amount of food on the plate, as well as eliminating sweet drinks and replacing them with plain water, should be encouraged. Also, outdoor physical activity should be encouraged.
