Medicines prohibited during pregnancy

Medicines forbidden in pregnancy are numerous and this category includes antibiotics and anti-inflammatories in particular. These can cause serious birth defects in newborns. It is easier for doctors and pregnant women to find out which pills are allowed in pregnancy, than the list of prohibited ones. However, here are some medicines that you must avoid at any cost during pregnancy!

Some medicines can endanger the health and life of the fetus. Many doctors advise pregnant women to stay away from medications especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. It is the most sensitive and risky period of pregnancy.

There are so many medicines, but especially chemicals used in many drugs that can endanger pregnancy. It is important to know that no drug is 100% safe in pregnancy. In addition, some of them may be safely administered during a certain period of pregnancy, and in another they may prove dangerous.

However, there are clear indications that certain antibiotics are harmful and have dangerous effects on pregnancy. Among the most serious are teratogenic effects, that is, congenital anomalies in the fetus. These include:

- tetracyclines;

- streptomycins;

- kanamycins.

And some anti-inflammatories can be dangerous, such as indomethacin and sometimes even ibuprofen should be avoided. Doctors recommend avoiding aspirin and salicylate-containing drugs. Other medicines and chemicals that must be used with great caution (preferably avoided) include:

- the sudafed;

- Prochlorperazine (Compazin);

- ciprofloxin (Cyprus);

- fluconazole (Diflucan).

Medications containing alcohol, phenytoin (Dilantin) and lithium (used in manic depression) are extremely dangerous for pregnancy. And the medication used in chemotherapy falls into this category. However, where needed, they can be administered, but with the risks of rigor and mandatory medical supervision.

Among the medications that should not be given in any form of pregnancy, because they cause birth disorders and complications include drugs:

- for the treatment of psoriasis (Tegison or Soriatane);

- for the treatment of acne (Accutane);

- those for the treatment of skin conditions;

- thalidomide and diethylstilbestrol (to prevent abortion);

- anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, phenytoin, valproate);

- to treat blood pressure problems (beta blockers, ACE inhibitors-angiotensin conversion enzyme);

- for the treatment of thyroid problems (radioactive iodine, those for reducing the goiter, etc.)

Anticoagulants are another category of drugs completely forbidden in pregnancy. These include heparin or warfarin.

There are plenty of drugs and chemicals that are dangerous for pregnancy. It is best to always seek the advice of your doctor before taking a medicine and to be aware of the side effects of pregnancy. While some are completely forbidden, others may be administered under certain conditions. Therefore, medical advice is essential.
