A Spanish doctor who killed four people and infected another 271 with hepatitis C by reusing syringes received a 1,933-year prison sentence. He will also have to pay damages of one million euros.
The court ruled that Juan Maeso Velez infected patients at four hospitals in Valencia using the same surgical equipment to self-anesthetize and to anesthetize other people between 1988 and 1997.
Maeso used anesthetics to drug himself and knew he had this virus in his blood. The doctor said he did not know that he was suffering from this disease and that he probably got the virus from one of the patients.
The doctor will make a maximum of 20 years of the sentence, at least so say the court officials in Valencia.
