Diversification of nutrition in children

Most voices, from the medical world of nutritionists and Anglo-Saxon and German pediatricians, insist on exclusive breast feeding by the age of 6 months. Only for children fed with milk formulas is recommended early diversification from 4 months.

Diversification begins by introducing vegetables, meat and fruits into nutrition. Flours are introduced after six months, because up to 4 months, the baby's intestine can only digest milk sugar (lactose) and only later, cereal starch.

Throughout the diversification, more than half of the daily caloric requirement will be provided either by breast milk or by the following formulas.

Vegetables and fruits

Vegetables are gradually introduced into the baby's diet in the form of puree, before the meat with 2-4 weeks. It is recommended to be offered two or three times during a week, according to the principle "it is proposed, it is not required".

The puree of vegetables (carrot, potato, peas, pumpkin and pumpkin, avocado) can be mixed with mother's milk, to be "sweetened" and consequently, easier to receive, given the taste sometimes fad. No sugar or salt should be added to the food, because the taste of a baby has nothing to do with the already "set" tastes of an adult.

The fruit puree can also be introduced from the shed of 6 months, combined with the cheese of cows or an instant rice flour. Before you start with the puree, you can give the child a few teaspoons of fruit juice (eg apple) to get used to the taste.

Cheese and yogurt

Cows' cheese and plain yogurt can be introduced into the baby's diet starting with a 6-month-old spill, which can then be mixed with fruit puree and / or a whole grain rice flour.

Meat and eggs

From the age of 6 months it can be introduced into the diet boiled chicken meat, and starting with 7 months the chicken liver and egg yolk. Start with a small quantity (20g), and continue until you consume these foods two to three times a week. Attention to the allergenic potential of the egg (albus).

After the age of 8 months you can also introduce oceanic fish into the diet, but if you have a child diagnosed with atopy, leave the fish, honey, egg white, fruit with small seeds (strawberries), wheat flour after one year old, due to the potential high allergenic.

For a baby approaching one year of age, a complete menu would consist of:

  • chicken or fish meat (20-50g) boiled, mixed with vegetable soup and then with more consistent mashed potatoes;
  • a table of fruit and one of cheese cheese with fruit or an instant rice flour;
  • two to three tables of milk (150-200ml of milk at a table).

The food is introduced one at a time, it is not necessary, but we are not beaten one by two. It is eaten with a teaspoon, with a frequency of two or three times a week, initially passed, and subsequently (as the baby's swallowing reflex is perfected) crushed or offered in small pieces. After meals, drink water, fruit juice diluted with water, herbal teas or unpowered compote juice.
