Folic acid is an important vitamin for any woman who is likely to become pregnant. Folic acid is part of the B vitamins group and helps prevent serious congenital malformations of the baby's brain or spinal cord (also called neural tube defects) as well as upper lip or heart malformations.
Folic acid (vitamin B9) plays an important role in the production of new cells in the body. In particular, folic acid is essential for the formation of red blood cells by the bone marrow.

Essential during pregnancy, vitamin B9 is the water-soluble vitamin of the group of vitamins B, having a fundamental role in the production of red blood cells and in the assimilation of nutrients from foods. Also, this vitamin prevents malformations.

Sources of Vitamin B9 - Folic acid is present in many foods: liver, milk, fermented cheese, green vegetables (asparagus, spinach, green cabbage, carrot). Specialists believe that everyone should provide a supplement of 0.4 mg of folic acid or 0.6 mg for pregnant women daily. In addition, folic acid needs vitamins B12 and B6 as catalysts to perform all its functions. Therefore, it is recommended that the daily supplement be a combination of the three vitamins (B9, B12 and B6). The dose indicated for B12 varies between 0.5 and 1 mg / day, and for B6 between 10 and 250 mg / day.

Vitamin B9 deficiency - Deficiency can be observed in case of undernutrition, in absorption disorders (due to digestive abnormalities), in pregnancy, in case of taking drugs with antifolic activity. The main manifestation of folic acid deficiency is a variety of anemia. It is then prescribed as a drug folic acid for oral administration (or often its derivative, folinic acid, for injection).
